Lajtenberger has always had a love for the handcrafted and stylish.
Along with her natural talent for choosing and matching the right
pieces, in only a few months time, she was able to turn an idea
into a living reality. "She's a doer" says a close friend of hers,
"when she gets an idea, she puts it right away into action". In
as little as four months, she was able to get financing, find a
showroom space, a shipping company and make several trips to villages
outside Cairo and Sharm El Sheikh, meeting local craftsmen and selecting
items for her Milano showroom.
 Aleksandra's
showroom, Mezzanotteecinque, of objects and home accessories imported
from Egypt has a warm personal touch. Immediately upon entering
the showroom you feel welcomed and at ease. The coco-leaf vases
have dried flowers in them, on the floor there are carpets in rich
colors and woven wool throws tossed over arm chairs with an elegant
nonce lance. Handcrafted glass, mosaic lanterns sparkle as the sun
shines in through the window. It is easy to image what the objects
may look like in your own home.
In addition to beautiful home accessories, Aleksandra has selected
for Mezzanotteecinque, special pieces of handmade jewellery, cotton
and silk scarves, as well as Galebeah (cotton embroidered gowns)
which are perfect for casual or beach wear.
When asked "Why Egypt?", her reply was "Other than the good business
opportunity to import something new and unusual it is a real pleasure
seeing, meeting the people, and discovering Egyptian culture."
Future prospects for Mezzanotteecinque are imports from Iran and
Lebanon as well as opening to the wholesale market.
All fabrics found in the Mezzanotteecinque showroom are natural
fibres and most objects are handcrafted by local artisans and craftsmen
from villages around Cairo and Sharm El Sheikh.
